Buffalo, Wyoming ยท at the foot of the Bighorns

Text without cell service, power or internet.

Volunteers are building a mesh of long-range LoRa radios around Buffalo, Wyoming: a way to stay in touch and be found when cell service and power are not there. Anyone with a compatible radio can join.

What this is

A volunteer effort to give the area free, off-grid messaging that keeps working when everything else does not. It runs on MeshCore, open-source firmware for inexpensive LoRa radios.

Emergency preparedness

Messaging with no tower, internet or mains power, and a possible aid for search and rescue and for tracking people in the Bighorn National Forest. See how.

Run by volunteers

Everyone involved does it for the love of it. Nobody is paid, and there is nothing to buy and no account to make.

Easy to join

Flash a supported board from your browser with the flasher, newest build first, with older versions a click away.

Join in

  1. Get a radio. A supported LoRa board costs about as much as a dinner out. See what to buy.
  2. Flash it. Plug it into your computer and install MeshCore from your browser with the flasher.
  3. Say hello. Pair it with the MeshCore phone app and send a message.

Who is involved

The mesh is a volunteer effort, affiliated with the Buffalo Area Radio Klub (BARK) and the Cloud Peak Radio and Electronics Group (CPREG). It does not have a name yet, and it is not a company or an official MeshCore project. Meet the affiliates.
